Itchy Rash

Spring and summer are in the air, making time for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors!  Unfortunately, warm seasons create skin irritants as heat, various plant life, and chemicals in sunscreen, and bug spray.  Other known irritants can be laundry detergent, lotions, fabrics, immune system disorders and medications may cause various rashes.  Most rashes can be treated at home, although persistent or severe rashes may require a trip to the doctor or provider.  Visit Grand Ave Urgent Care for treatment and fast relief.  Walk-ins welcome, no appointment necessary.


Various Rash Types and Symptoms

  • General rash: Redness, read streaks, and itching on the skin

  • Heat rash: Small red bumps or dots that look like tiny pimples, generally found on the had, neck and shoulders

  • Hives: Redness, small bumps, or larger raised areas on the skin

  • Blisters: Fluid-filled bumps that look like bubbles on the skin’s surface

  • Athlete’s Foot: A common skin inflammation of the webs of the toes and soles of the feet


Possible Rash Causes

Different rashes are attributed to different causes, such as poison ivy, oak, sumac and nettle are common itchy rash or blister causing plants.  In hot weather when sweat ducts become clogged and swell heat rash can occur leading to itchy skin.  Many people develop rashes when exposed to nickel or chemicals found in fabrics, household or cosmetic products.  Scabies, shingles, and impetigo are rashes caused by parasitic, viral or bacterial infections.


To reduce your risk of complications contact your doctor or provider if your strep throat symptoms don’t improve within 48 hours of taking an antibiotic.  They may need to prescribe a different antibiotic to fight the infection.


Self Treatment

Over-the-counter products may be helpful treatments for many skin rashes.   Avoid contact with any substance that causes the allergic reactions, as well as plants or chemicals that are known skin irritants.


Rash symptoms worsening or show no sign of improvement lasting for more than a few days, or rashes that are unexplained should be evaluated by a doctor or provider.
